Professional Curiosity
Duration: 2 hours
Delivery Method: Face to Face or Virtual
Who is this course for? Local Authority Officers, Social Housing Providers and Other Housing Professionals
Course Content:
A lack of professional curiosity is a common theme among serious case reviews, especially those involving children and vulnerable adults. In this session we will explore the barriers to professional curiosity and how we need to challenge these barriers and assumptions. We will then explore what it means to be professionally curious –at risk individuals rarely just ‘open up’ and communicate their problems – so we as professionals must be curious, observant and employ strong listening skills.
This session uses action learning sets and scenarios, giving learners the opportunity to reflect on own practice.
Learning Outcomes:
- Review some of the serious cases highlighting the lack of professional curiosity with a reminder on internal policies such as safeguarding
- Define professional curiosity and its importance in housing
- Understand how curiosity leads to legal duties (e.g. HHSRS, safeguarding, Awaab’s’ law)
- Apply curiosity skills to tenant engagement and property inspections
- Using the 4P model, recognise indicators of hidden harm, poor living conditions, and unmet needs
- Use questioning and observation to explore issues without making assumptions
- Reflect on own biases and barriers to curiosity.
